The Intrepid Snail

Today was a walking day. This morning's 6 mile stroll included a portion of the walk/bike path and the sanctuary of the green space of Walnut Creek.  Spring is here already and with it various songbirds: mockingbirds, finches, cardinals.  Lots of squirrels.

Slumbering elms, walnuts, pecans. The ever present live oaks. Mountain cedar and its devil spawn pollen.  Invasion bridgehead stands of ligustrum and china berry.

And in numerous spots along the trail snails making their way across the concrete.  Some squished, some still moving. This one just passing the halfway point of its slow journey to the relative safety of grass on the other side.

One of the many rock stacks marks where the trail climbs out of the creek and winds its way toward the road network. As I exit the green space I rejoin the morning cacophony of droning tires and angry honks, accompanied by the serenade of ambulance and police siren.

Scurrying vehicles all racing in a hurry to wait. Important comings and goings of truck, bus and car. My mind wanders back to the snail.
